What is a Ductless Mini-Split AC System?

You may think your HVAC system is running fine, but the reality is that even the best AC systems have their weaknesses. For example, traditional HVAC systems can waste quite a bit of energy in the ductwork. That doesn’t take into account things like duct leaks which can cause even more energy waste. A more energy efficient alternative to traditional units is a ductless mini-split AC system.

What is a ductless mini-split AC system?

A ductless mini-split system consists of two primary parts: a wall-mounted indoor unit and a compressor outside of the home. The compressor is inverter-driven, so it will speed up and slow down instead of completely stopping like a traditional unit, which is another way in which ductless mini-split systems are more energy efficient. This system is similar to the setup you would see with a window AC unit but much less obtrusive. Only a small hole needs to be drilled into the wall to install a ductless system, which is also less noisy than window AC units.

What are the benefits of a ductless AC system?

Ductless AC systems come with many benefits. For one, you get increased energy efficiency due to the air flowing directly into the room instead of through ductwork. Interestingly enough, the lack of ducts also leads to an increase in the air quality, as ducts can quickly become dirty and pollute the air in your home. They are also much more flexible than more traditional AC systems, as they are relatively small and easy to install. You can even place a control unit in each room for zone-based climate control.

Should you install a ductless AC system?

The benefits of a ductless AC system are clear by now, but is it the right choice for your home? Ductless systems are great for new buildings or new additions to your home because of their ease of installation. They are also great if you have a smaller house without room for the ductwork that comes with traditional systems

So is there any reason you wouldn’t want to install a ductless AC system? The upfront cost of a ductless system can be significantly higher than a comparable window unit, so that you should consider this in your decision.

Ultimately a ductless AC system will save you money by lowering your energy bills, but how long it will take to pay itself off depends on your local climate and how much you use the system.
